Culture Cube

When I thought about what community I wanted to showcase for this project, one of my first ideas was the Asian community. I wanted to create something that could help people to appreciate the culture, cuisine, beliefs, and history of the country my family was born, Laos. My mom and her family were deeply affected by the Vietnam War, and it is a story and history that I don’t think many people know about.

Therefore, with this project, I am making a subscription box that sends the subscriber to a different country in a box every month. Each year, you will explore a different continent. This year, the continent is Asia, and this particular month, the country is Laos.

The box will contain items that the whole family can enjoy. It will include Lao recipes, coloring books on plants and animals that live in Laos, and even a video walk-through of what to expect when visiting a local Lao Buddhist temple in the subscriber’s area. A list of Buddhist temples in the United States is also included to encourage the subscriber to visit one. I am taking this opportunity to write my mom’s story about her family’s escape from the communist invasion of Laos, traveling to America, and her experience with the Vietnam War at such a young age. It is a story that I always wished she could share in some way, and now she can, with this book. The box will come with a card that previews what can be expected for 2023. 2022 is for Culture Cube Asia, and the following year, 2023, will be for Culture Cube Europe.

From this subscription box, my hope is that families can learn and appreciate each country’s culture and heritage every month. Since this pandemic started, many trips had to be canceled. Traveling to different countries is harder to do than before. This subscription box could fill that desire of traveling to experience other cultures.
